'The Docile Body' series of paintings reflect, through abstraction, on the cyclical nature of torture and violence, on the sexual aspect inherent in much violence, and on the dialectical nature of the relationship which binds an authority figure and its subject. Throughout the series, representational modes of rendering are used to create abstract forms. The space of the paintings echoes this complexity, attempting to appear both flat and dimensional. Katherine Sullivan lives and works in Michigan and Brooklyn, NY. Her paintings have been included in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. Her work has been supported by a Fulbright grant, two Mellon grants and artist residencies at Cooper Union, Ragdale and the Wurlitzer foundations.
