Julia Coash’s paintings are inspired by objects found in her physical environment. Having lived and worked around the world, her travels and research interests are important influences in her work. These inspirations range from Egyptian paper cones and burning reed baskets to boat hulls and vines. Dissolved by veils of light and atmosphere, tangible forms evolve into suggestions of ethereal light. Intentional ambiguity creates a tension between the literal world and the abstract as solid forms become gestures of pure paint. Her subjects are expressions of physicality, while at the same time revealing a less tangible range of emotional possibilities. The use of pentimento reveals the painting/drawing process through transparent layers of color. The juxtaposition of painted over areas with exposed (or excavated) pentimenti, leaves shards of information that encourage the viewer to explore beneath the surface.

Coash is currently a Professor in Studio Art and Art History at Albertus Magnus College (New Haven, CT) where she is also Co-chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of the Masters in Liberal Studies Program.  She has held teaching positions at Bermuda College, the American University in Cairo, Egypt, Bradford College, and Wabash College. She has exhibited her work in Bermuda, Paris, Cairo and throughout the United States.  Coash received her MFA in Painting from James Madison University; a MSEd in Higher Education and a BA in Ethnographic Photography both from Southern Illinois University. In conjunction with these studies she completed field work and research projects on "Attitudes Towards Nature in Chinese Painting During the Song Dynasty"; "The Evolution of Design and Style in Navajo Weaving" and "The Weaving Techniques Forms and Styles of Tarabuco, Bolivia".
