monique johannet: intimations

Exhibition Dates: october 30 - November 24, 2018

Reception: Thursday, november 1, 6 - 8 pm

The Painting Center presents Intimations, a selection of work by Monique Johannet in the Project Room. This work imagines an intimate connection between painting and written language, vibrant yet fraught with tensions. When stated verbally, formal relationships, like those of color or scale, double their meanings and echo dynamics that occur beyond the rectangle. Handwriting, penmanship, typography, little bells - whatever they are made of, letters exist to form words. But they consist of line, shape, color, and texture, so letters can converse fluently within painting's frame of reference. In cursive, beautiful and increasingly lonely, issues of communication and obsolescence entwine, perhaps forming a metaphor for the present moment as it slips away into what will become a troubled past. Monique Johannet lives in Massachusetts and is represented by Carroll and Sons in Boston, MA. For more information, visit: carrollandsons.net.
