The Painting Center is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Beyond the Sun by artist Lisa Petker Mintz in the Main Gallery. The exhibition will run from April 25 – May 20, 2023 with an opening reception on Thursday, April 27 from 5 to 8 pm.

Lisa Petker Mintz’s surfaces hold sprawling movements and splashes of vibrant pigment. Overlapping transparent shapes informed by nature, inspired by the artist’s morning strolls, respond to moments dense with loosely gestured marks. Materials, mark-making, and experimentation are critical to the artist’s process. The artist works from all sides of the canvas, shifting and transforming with each layer of color and material, a reminder that reality is never still.

Petker Mintz is a prolific artist whose process is long and complex. Working on five to twelve paintings at a time, the canvases sweep cinematically across the studio walls. Like nature’s shifting moods, each canvas is suspended in different states of completion, waiting for the artist’s attention. Scissors, brushes, pencils, a spray bottle, palette knife, and an airbrush are just some of the tools used. Petker Mintz leaves no process left unused. Applications of paint move between fast, slow, messy, neat, and sparse. The artist’s excitement of materials and process is palpable. The viewer is compelled to step back and take in what feels chaotic at first sight. Then the sensation of curiosity draws us in. We are pulled closer into the layers, so curiously close we practically push our noses against the glossy surface to gaze into the artist’s world. In a recent painting, Fallen Leaves, Lisa has expanded her ideas on surface through the use of rice painting, and chine collé applications.
