A group of small paintings of ovals, lozenges, curved meanders, zig-zaging diagonals updates the abiding formal concerns of Kate Davis. This series demonstrates her gifts as a painter who can lend mystery and uncertainty of origin to forms that have become by now her own constant visual language. They are familiar, but seem to appear autonomously as from ancient markings and yet represent a serious engagement with the nature of abstraction and its special relevance to our time, and how it persists in its appeal to so many painters.
