Julie Karabenick: Architectural Fantasies
Exhibition Dates: May 26, 2015 - June 20, 2015
Reception: Thursday, May 28, 6 - 8 pm
The Painting Center is pleased to announce Julie Karabenick’s solo exhibition, Architectural Fantasies, in its Project Room. Each painting features complex and intricately balanced clusters of architectural fragments and forms that simultaneously clamor for the viewer’s attention. Each cluster presses forward toward the viewer in an impossibly shallow space that defies a single, coherent reading. Ambiguities abound as flat shapes intermix freely with shapes that imply volume, and multiple perspective systems clash. Julie Karabenick’s work has been included in over 70 exhibitions across the US, including seven solo exhibitions in New York City, Chicago, and Ann Arbor, Michigan where she resides. For the past 10 years, she has been the editor of a scholarly online art project called Geoform (www.geoform.net), which explores the use of geometric form and structure in contemporary art from around the world. Currently Geoform shows the work of nearly 300 artists and includes over 40 in-depth artist interviews. For additional images visit www.juliekarabenick.com.
