Gerri Rachins - Getting from One Place to Another: Recent Paintings by Gerri Rachins
CURATED by Barbara o’Brien
EXHIBITION DATES: March 4 - 29, 2025
Getting From One Place to Another: Recent Paintings by Gerri Rachins, a solo exhibition of new and recent works by Boston-based painter features 24 paintings, organic abstractions – most Flashe and acrylic ink on paper – created in 2023-24. The work is organized into what curator Barbara O'Brien calls "trios, pairs, and stand – alones.” Some connections are based on sympathetic palettes; often the groupings are meant to showcase the rapport between painting and drawing that is such a distinctive aspect of Rachins' vocabulary. The exhibition title, Getting From One Place to Another is taken from the pages of the Science section of the New York Times, which Rachins peruses each week. According to Rachins, "The polarity between external surrounding and internal thoughts provided source material for my recent paintings.”
Fukuko harris: My Present Heritage
EXHIBITION DATES: March 4 - 29, 2025
RECEPTION: Thursday, march 6, 5 - 8 pm
My Present Heritage, a solo exhibition of mixed-media works by artist Fukuko Harris, who was born and raised in Tokyo. The folktales from Harris’ childhood have influenced her life and imagination as an artist. Almost all of them have been retold in Japanese anime-style that became popular in the 1980s. A reflection of anime's "colorful graphics, expressive characters, and action-packed plots" can be experienced in Harris' lively three-dimensional multimedia sculpture as playful, abstract, visual narrative drawings in space. The idea of incorporating the heritage of Japanese folk tales and the worldwide popularity of anime into her artwork was not something Harris ever thought about until she saw "The Tale of Princess Kaguva.” Incorporating folktales and anime into her work allowed her to bring forth images from her childhood that are a meaningful part of her present heritage.
